If you where the first person with a microscope, what would you have looked at? What would you have felt? The rush of awe and amazement must have been overwhelming. To fully appreciate this amazing drawing you must first understand the man behind it!
For this reproduction, I recreated a drawing by a Dutchman named Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek. He was a man with no fortune and no higher education who set out to make the perfect silks known to man. In his pursuit for the perfect silk, he improved his glass to see closer and closer to the threads. At only 3mm across this magnifying glass was less than spectacular to look at than it was to look through.
Being the amateur scientist he was; one day after rain, he collected a sample and examined it with his newly improved glass. Can you imagine the surprise he must have felt when he saw small creatures swimming around? “There can’t possibly be life at that level,” he thought to himself. And while it took much convincing to convince those around him, he produced the first drawing ever made of a creature smaller than what our eyes can see!
Isn’t that an incredible story?! This unique vintage science drawing would make a great gift for that science lover in your life! This would also be a unique graduation gift for a biology or chemistry major!
